چکیده

Digital speech transmission systems use source coding to reduce the bit rate and channel coding to correct transmission errors. Furthermore, in periods of a very poor channel quality error concealment of residual bit errors becomes necessary as channel decoding fails. However, if the channel is clear, channel coding would not be required at all and the speech quality could be improved by allowing a higher bit rate for source encoding. Usually a compromise is taken between speech quality in case of clear channel and error robustness in case of poor channel quality. This paper addresses the problem of a joint optimization of error concealment and source/channel coding. Under the premise of a minimum mean square error criterion for signal reconstruction it turns out that error concealment instead of error correction may be the best choice if source coding leaves su cient residual parameter correlations by less bit rate reduction.

Softbit speech decoding: a new approach to error concealment

In digital speech communication over noisy channels there is the need for reducing the subjective effects of residual bit errors which have not been eliminated by channel decoding. This task is usually called error concealment. We describe a new and generalizing approach to error concealment as part of a modified robust speech decoder. It can be applied to any speech codec standard and preserve...

Robust speech recognition over mobile networks using combined weighted viterbi decoding and subvector based error concealment

Robustness against transmission errors is one of the primary barriers to the widespread application of automatic speech recognition (ASR) in mobile communications. We have previously proposed a subvector based error concealment (EC) method that conducts error detection and mitigation in the feature-domain at the subvector level. This paper presents a weighted Viterbi decoding (WVD) algorithm th...

Iterative source-channel decoder using extrinsic information from softbit-source decoding - Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2001. Proceedings. 2001 IEEE InternationalConference on

In digital mobile communications efficient compression algorithms are needed to encode speech or audio signals. As the determined source parameters are highly sensitive to transmission errors, robust source and channel decoding schemes are required. This contribution deals with an iterative source-channel decoding approach where a simple channel decoder and a softbit-source decoder are concaten...

An integrated solution for error concealment in DSR systems over wireless channels

Distributed Speech Recognition involves the development of techniques to conceal the degradations that the transmission channel introduces in the speech features. This work proposes a lowcomplexity high-accuracy error concealment technique compatible with the DSR ETSI standards. This is achieved by combining three different techniques: fast MMSE estimation, Viterbi decoding with soft-data and s...

Robust speech decoding: a universal approach to bit error concealment

In digital mobile communication systems there is the need for reducing the subjective e ects of residual bit errors which have not been eliminated by channel decoding by the use of error concealment techniques. Due to the fact that most standards do not specify these algorithms bit exactly, there is room for new solutions to improve the speech quality. This contribution develops a new approach ...
